COMMUNITY

Radio Scarborough is THE dedicated Community Station for the Borough of Scarborough. We broadcast from The Street, which is Scarborough’s premier community centre and the base for many of the area’s community groups, including Coast and Vale Community Action and Disability Action Group, and many others.

While we pride ourselves on playing a wide variety of music which presents a genuine alternative to most of the other stations available, it is our work in and with the community which is our priority. We actively encourage people from all backgrounds to get involved with the station: whether it’s simply to promote your charity or community event; to talk about your role in the community; or if you're prepared to dedicate some time why not join the team as a volunteer? You’re most welcome. We present a wide range of features and interviews: from a light-hearted look at our borough and its characters, right through to the more serious issues which affect specific groups and the population at large.

We already have ongoing working relationships with many organisations, including Barrowcliff Big Local, Scarborough YMCA, Scarborough and Ryedale Stronger Communities, Disability Action Group and would welcome the opportunity to bring anybody else on board, who believes they may benefit from a relationship with us.

SCARBOROUGH RUFC

We have just completed our first full year as Scarborough RUFC’s Matchday Media Partner. Both parties are extremely pleased with the partnership. Scarborough RUFC is generally regarded as having the best amateur rugby set-up in the country and it is a privilege to be involved with the club. Even in the short time of our association, we have seen significant expansion at their home, Silver Royd, with the addition/extension of Harley’s cafe/bar and the opening of the squash centre, which was enabled by the McCabe family of Scarborough International Properties. The McCabes are very keen to extend their community work to other areas, particularly sporting ones and we are currently in discussions, to see how we can work together, for the benefit of the community.

We will be recommencing our live commentary from home games at Silver Royd, once the new season gets underway, and we very much hope to extend our operation to include other events there, as well as bringing listeners commentary from the odd away game.

Anybody who listens to our Saturday Sport programme (back in July), will already know that rugby is just one of the many sports we cover and all of us at Radio Scarborough would like to thank Martin Drury for the hard work he does, in compiling news and results from a whole host of sports, especially at grass roots level.

PLACEMENTS and TRAINING

Training is a very important part of what we do and we are currently expanding our activities in this field. Obviously there is induction training and ongoing development for anybody who wishes to join us as a presenter and reach the required standard, but we are perfectly happy to provide introductory training, just to see how things work and how we bring radio to the community. We are currently working with Barrowcliff Big Local and Scarborough and Ryedale Stronger Communities, in training people of all ages, in all aspects of radio broadcasting and news-gathering.

We are an accredited placement provider for Northumbria University and hope to announce similar accreditations very soon. As well as providing placements for bona fide colleges and universities in the UK, we also offer work experience to foreign students and this is an area in which we expect to see major growth, over the next couple of years.

Why offer placements to people outside of the borough, when you’re a community station?

Firstly, we don’t believe our borough is surrounded by a wall and we feel that training and education should be available to anybody who wants it - as long as we are in a position to provide it. Secondly, our borough relies heavily on tourism and this being the case, we feel it is part of our job to promote the Borough of Scarborough far and wide. If somebody comes to us from Germany for work experience and then goes back there singing the praises of our area, then everyone’s a winner!
